Cynthia Erivo talked about her role in ‘Wicked’ because she has always felt like an outsider.
The 37-year-old star plays Elphaba in the two-part film adaptation of the hit musical of the same name and noted that she and her alter ego were similar in that they were “a little bit different” from everyone else.
Cynthia said of ‘The View’: “When I first saw it a few years ago, I felt like I recognized something in the character, the feeling of being outside, of being a little different, of not belonging .
“And I think there was something about it that felt familiar, and I felt like it was important to be part of the storytelling because I could understand it well.”
The ‘Harriet’ star has always considered herself ‘different’ and hopes others who feel the same way will be inspired by seeing Elphaba in the film.
She said: “I think I’m often a bit of an odd one out. When I walk into the room, and especially in this specific field of work, I am different.
“There aren’t many who look like me. I stand out, I’m the odd one out.
“I hope people see Elphaba and understand if they feel different, and feel like they’re outside of it, that that just makes them more special.”
Cynthia stars in the film opposite pop star Ariana Grande and explains how she developed an instant ‘connection’ with the chart-topper.
She told ‘Extra’: “When we found out we were doing this, I asked her to come over and just relax. We organized it together and she came to my house. We sat on my floor and talked for hours and hours and hours.
“I think at that moment we both realized we had something, like an instant connection.”
