In a Week 6 rout of the Cowboys, the Lions cleared the trick-play portion of the playbook, focusing on plays where offensive linemen reported as eligible.
In the aftermath of the game, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (a Cowboys fan) said Lions coach Dan Campbell has “no class.”
On Monday, Dan Campbell gave an answer that only Dan Campbell could give.
‘The last time someone called me classless I drank wine from a bottleCampbell told reporters on Monday, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Christie’s comments came on Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s radio show.
“That’s Dan Campbell,” Christie said Thursday, according to Birkett. “He has no class, never had one. So it’s fine. Look, Dan Campbell, that’s who he is, and what goes around comes around.”
Christie opined (probably accurately) that the action was sparked by the controversial call that negated a potential win over the Cowboys late last season, after the Lions – who had three offensive linemen approach referee Brad Allen – successfully not only defeated the Cowboys, but also Allen about who was and was not eligible to run a route and get a pass.
“It hurt the Lions,” Christie said. “The Cowboys benefited from it. But now, that’s why… you beat the hell out of these guys and rub it in. I don’t think professionals do that, but it’s his prerogative. It is the reputation he will carry with him. And honestly, I think most people now think that’s his reputation anyway.”
Most people think Campbell has a great reputation. Most people love Campbell. Most people think he is a great coach. He has led the Lions to consecutive 5-1 starts for the first time in NINETY years.
Hopefully Campbell will celebrate that achievement tonight by drinking wine not from a bottle but from a box.
