Dangerous heat possible early next week

June 21 – Residents will want to take precautions as dangerously warm temperatures are expected to move through the area on Sunday and into next week.

The National Weather Service in Jackson is forecasting heat indexes around 105 degrees starting Sunday and possibly rising to 110 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. The hot weather brings the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Some steps to reduce the risk of heat-related illness include avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, taking regular breaks while working outdoors and ensuring adequate hydration, the weather service said in its forecast.

On its website, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says residents should watch for heavy sweating, headaches, dizziness and nausea as warning signs and move to a cooler place and drink water if these symptoms occur. If a person is not sweating, has a weak pulse, is breathing shallowly and quickly, and has a body temperature higher than 105 degrees, call 911 or go to a hospital immediately.

Pet owners should also take precautions to help their furry friends stay safe in the heat. MSEMA encourages residents to be aware of the temperature of asphalt or concrete, as it can be too hot and burn pets’ paws. Animals need access to fresh water and shade, and a wading pool or sprinkler can be a fun way to keep pets cool in the summer heat.
