Danny Green retires after 15 seasons in the NBA, 3 championships with Spurs, Raptors, Lakers

After fifteen years in the NBA, Danny Green is calling it a career.

Green, 37, played 14 seasons in the NBA with six teams: the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies.

“I never thought I would write this letter, even though I knew this day would eventually come,” Green wrote in a statement on social media. “My life revolved around this game, which has taken me all over the world and introduced me to amazing people. It has been an amazing journey that I am extremely proud of, and I could not have achieved it without the support of so many.

“I am who I am because of you, so thank you!

“To all my friends, family, coaches and teammates from high school, college and the pros; to my wife and little one, who pushed me to not only be a great player, but a better person every day. I hope I make you proud when I hang up this jersey and sneakers and officially leave the game.

“I am excited about the next chapter and look forward to overcoming new challenges.”

Green was part of three NBA title-winning teams with the Spurs (2014), Raptors (2019) and Lakers (2020). He is one of four players in the league’s history to win championships with three different teams.

Before being a second-round pick by the Cavaliers in 2009, Green played four seasons at the University of North Carolina. During his senior season, he started every game for the Tar Heels that year and ultimately helped the program win its fifth national title.

On his podcast, Green said that after playing just two games with the Sixers last season before being ruled out, teams didn’t call to add him and that’s when he started to realize his career might be over.

Now that his playing days are behind him, Green hopes to enter the media world to continue being a part of the game.
