Prince Fans Flock to Minnesota for the 40th Anniversary of ‘Purple Rain’

MINNEAPOLIS— Prince fans in his hometown now know when they can see the highly anticipated event Stage adaptation “Purple Rain”..

The show runs from April 10, 2025 to May 11, 2025 at the State Theater in Minneapolis. The show’s official opening night is April 30, producers announced Thursday.

After playing in Minneapolis, the show heads to New York for its Broadway debut.

Tony Award nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz will direct the adaptation of Prince’s 1984 film and album. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins handles the book, based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn. Jason Michael Webb, who won a 2019 Tony Award for his work on “Choir Boy,” arranges and orchestrates the show’s music. Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, longtime collaborators and bandmates with Prince, serve as music advisors.

Casting calls for the show will take place this summer in Minneapolis, producers said.

“Purple rain” is one of the 11 performances in Hennepin Theater Trust’s “Bank of America Broadway on Hennepin” season, which kicks off in September with “Back to the Future: The Musical” and concludes in August 2025 with “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.”

The day is next Tuesday the 40th anniversary from the album “Purple Rain”.

Prince died of an accidental painkiller overdose at his home on April 21, 2016 Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, which has now become a museum in his honor.
