Dayton NAACP calls for release of bodycam video after 1 shot, killed by police

The Dayton Unit of the NAACP is speaking out after a person was shot and killed by Dayton police Saturday evening.

The organization released a statement following the shooting on Saturday.

The Dayton Branch NAACP is aware and has interviewed witnesses on the scene of this officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a teenager in Dayton, Ohio. We will be conducting a thorough investigation into this case in the coming days and will be requesting body camera footage to see where the evidence leads us to determine the truth in this case.

Our thoughts go out to the relatives.

News Center 7 is trying to determine both the age and name of the person killed in Saturday’s shooting.

As reported on Saturday News Center 7 at 11amPolice officers responded to “address the vacancy/block lot issues” in the 500 block of Negley Place, the department said.

Officers approached a man who was believed to be carrying a firearm.

Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal said the man ran from the officers, then turned around and pointed a gun at them.

According to a statement posted on the website, two officers fired their weapons at the man. Dayton Police & Fire Facebook Page.

Police “began to provide medical assistance” to the man as medics were dispatched to the scene.

Medics took the man to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

News Center 7′s Malik Patterson spoke with Dr. Derrick Foward, president of the Dayton chapter of the NAACP.

He said he had received several calls and texts and had also spoken to people at the scene about Saturday night’s shooting.

“I went to the scene and spoke to a few witnesses who told us that the police were chasing certain people,” said Dr. Foward. “We won’t know if these are the facts until we get the footage, but we will be monitoring this specific situation closely. If there is any negligence on the part of the police, we will deal with it quickly and decisively.”

He also wants to let the community know that the Dayton NAACP is there.

“We are here, we are going to be the handguards of justice,” said Dr. Foward. “We will find out the facts in this specific case.”

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is handling the criminal investigation and the Dayton Police Professional Standards Bureau will conduct a separate administrative investigation.
