A deceased person was found in the wheel well of a plane that landed in Hawaii on Christmas Eve.
The United Airlines flight from Chicago arrived at Maui’s Kahului Airport on Tuesday and the body was found in one of the main landing gear, the company told USA TODAY in a statement on Wednesday.
“The wheel well was only accessible from outside the aircraft. At this time it is unclear how and when the individual gained access to the wheel well,” the company said, adding that it is working with law enforcement on the investigation.
The Maui Police Department confirmed with USA TODAY on Wednesday that it is “actively investigating the discovery of a deceased individual on an inbound flight from the mainland.”
Police say no further details are available at this time.
