DEARBORN, Mich. (CBS-DETROIT) – There’s nothing better as a child than receiving gifts during the holidays, so that’s why Santa Claus is teaming up with members of the Dearborn Fire Department to deliver gifts to children receiving care at the Corewell Health Children’s Center for Exceptional Families.
On Wednesday, children like 6-year-old Ayden Jenkins went one by one to Santa Claus, who had a present ready. Ayden was excited to see his friend St. Nick.
“At Christmas, I open all the presents Santa has given me,” Ayden said.
Ayden’s mother, Chonda Calloway, said this is a day she looks forward to every year.
“Times are tough for everyone right now,” Calloway said. “It’s hard for everyone, and for the center to even help parents a little bit. It takes a little bit of stress off of us, and we love that.”
People love the annual tradition at Corewell Health Children’s Center for Exceptional Families. The center treats approximately 3,500 patients annually, including children with developmental disabilities.
Dearborn firefighters and police officers helped organize the event Wednesday.
“We want to thank you for everything they do, not just for Christmas presents, but for everything they do for the community and keeping us safe,” Calloway said.
The first responders helped buy specific toys the children wanted, and Santa delivered them.
“You just can’t put into words what a small act of kindness will do to people,” said Dearborn firefighter Chad Bronson.
“When they come here, we want them to know that they are deeply loved, cared for and cherished and celebrated for all the milestones they achieve throughout the year,” says Dr .Susan Youngs, director of Corewell Health Children’s Center. for exceptional families.
More than 20 children met Santa Claus and received gifts during Wednesday’s event.
