Death of an Eastern Correctional Institution inmate, which is being investigated as a homicide

Maryland State Police investigators are investigating the death of a Somerset County State Prison inmate as a homicide.

The inmate is identified as Eugene Stanford, 49. Stanford was declared missing by emergency medical services. He was a state prison inmate serving time at Eastern Correctional Institution in Princess Anne.

A suspect, also an inmate, has been identified. He has not been charged at this time and will not be identified until charges are filed.

At 12:45 p.m. Saturday, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ Internal Investigations Unit regarding an inmate death that occurred Friday at approximately 3:30 p.m. Investigators told Stanford State Police autopsy results revealed foul play and his death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Investigators from the state police homicide unit are continuing the investigation. Assistance is being provided by State Police crime scene technicians and investigators from the DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit. Once completed, the investigation will be referred to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges.

The investigation continues.
