Just as the Colorado balloon was filling with current success and future possibilities, Kansas popped it Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.
After the No. 16 Buffaloes’ 37-21 loss to the unranked Jayhawks, coach Deion Sanders blamed his team’s reaction to the praise it received.
“We started to smell ourselves a littleSanders said after the game, via ESPN.com’s Max Olson. “That’s what I just said to our team. We became intoxicated with success. We became intoxicated with the multitude of articles and the assumption that we are this and the assumption that we are that. And we didn’t play CU football. That’s why we got a kick in the ass. It is what it is.”
On the way, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders appeared to have pushed an official. He was not punished for the gesture.
Kansas dominated the game, holding the ball for more than 40 minutes, outscoring Colorado 331 to 42 and not punting once.
Colorado had won four games in a row. The loss complicates their path to the Big 12 championship. For Kansas, which started 1-5, it was the third straight win against teams in the top 25.
Sanders’ team’s outcome caps a week in which two-time star Travis Hunter said he would leave for the draft — and Deion’s prospects at the next level had generated plenty of buzz.
