SEATTLE (AP) — Democratic Rep. Kim Schrier won a fourth term in Washington on Thursday, defeating Republican Carmen Goers in a district made up of a mix of wealthy Seattle suburbs and farmland in central Washington.
“The Eighth District has made clear who they want to represent – a pragmatic leader committed to working with both parties,” Schrier said in a statement. “I am thrilled to continue my work to lower costs for my constituents, protect women’s right to choose, support local law enforcement and improve public safety.”
The 8th District seat had always been GOP-held before Schrier, a pediatrician, took office in 2019. She survived a series of somewhat close races since then before facing Goers this year.
Schrier has combined progressive positions, such as protecting abortion rights, with an emphasis on securing highway money or funding for specialty crop research facilities. The Washington Farm Bureau supported her this year.
Goers, a commercial banker, said she worked to reduce inflation, stop further regulation of American companies, support law enforcement and reduce crime. She also vowed to “wage war with the Department of Education,” saying that instead of learning to read, write and count, children are “getting caught up in the culture wars of the progressive left.”
