(CBS DETROIT) – Detroit police are investigating whether a juvenile was shot by police during a chase on Wednesday.
At approximately 2:37 p.m., police responded to the area of ​​Grandville and Trojan Avenue for a report of a man shooting at people in O’Hair Park. Police discovered the male suspect was in a gray Jeep Cherokee and a second person was in another Jeep Cherokee. A gray Jeep matching the description of the suspect vehicle was later spotted, leading to a police chase.
DPD says an officer responding to the chase in the area of ​​Seven Mile Road and Bentler fired a shot as the vehicle approached him and other police cars. DPD says the video confirms the officer fired one shot. Investigation also revealed that someone in the car raised an AR-style long gun outside the window moments before the officer fired the shot.
The chase continued at high speed for several blocks and eventually stopped when the gray Jeep suffered a flat tire. The people in the car then got out and ran away.
The police found and arrested five people. One of the people suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is in stable condition.
Investigators determined that one of the Jeep Cherokees had been reported stolen. Four firearms were also found, including an AR-style long rifle and an AR-style pistol.
DPD is now trying to determine if the injured person was shot by the responding officer or during the O’Hair Park shooting. The investigation has been turned over to the Homicide Task Force, led by the Michigan State Police.
The Professional Standards Bureau is also investigating whether police violated any policies.
