(CBS DETROIT) – Detroit police are still looking for a shooter afterward four people were shot and one person was killed.
The shooting happened Monday afternoon on Haverhill Street on Detroit’s east side.
“It’s tragic, it really is. I just didn’t have to end up like this,” Albert Hughes said.
Hughes lives about five houses away from the location where a gunman opened fire.
Tavontae Mathis-Jones, 20, was rushed to St. John Ascension Hospital in Detroit, where he died from his injuries. Another 20-year-old man is currently in critical condition. The other victims include a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.
Detroit police went door to door Tuesday, interviewing neighbors, trying to figure out what led to the fatal shooting.
Hughes can’t imagine taking someone’s life was worth it.
‘Speechless. By words or whatever it was, no one has to go that way,” Hughes said.
Other neighbors said they were terrified by the shooting and said many children live in the neighborhood.
“I try to keep my kids all inside. I don’t want them outside because of things like this,” said a neighbor speaking off camera.
Meanwhile, Hughes said he hopes the shooting doesn’t lead to more violence in his neighborhood.
“Thoughts and prayers for the family…just put an end to this nonsense,” Hughes said.
Police are asking the public for any information. Anyone with information can call Detroit police or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 800-Speak Up.
