(CBS DETROIT) — On Friday, Detroit police held a press conference to discuss security ahead of the Detroit Lions season opener on Sunday.

Cmdr. Matthew Fulgenzi told CBS News Detroit that the department is ready with a layered approach.

“We are ready and we are prepared,” Fulgenzi said. “We are looking forward to a great season.”

The plan involves multiple agencies, such as the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police, working closely together to prevent problems before they happen.

“You’re going to see some officers in the stadium, outside the stadium,” Fulgenzi told CBS News Detroit. “There’s also going to be officers that you won’t see. Some of them are in plain clothes.”

The chief said they will be watching all sorts of movements on the ground. The department will also be monitoring it from the Real Time Crime Center, located at its Downtown Detroit headquarters.

“When you put it all together, we have a comprehensive public safety plan,” Fulgenzi said.

Detroit police also indicated they are prepared for large crowds and that last spring’s NFL Draft will be the benchmark for all Lions home games this season.

“Over the course of three days, we had 700,000 guests from all over the United States,” said Commander Fulgenzi. “There were no incidents, and that’s because of our planning, our messaging, and working with this community. We’re really looking forward to this season.”
