Detroit vet offers advice on keeping dogs cool during heat wave

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. (CBS Detroit) – We’re expecting a massive heat wave in Southeast Michigan next week.

Temperatures approaching triple digits pose numerous potential health risks for all dog breeds. Even if they’re at the door gasping for some time outside, it’s important to know how to help them cope with the heat and what to look out for if it gets too much.

From the sidewalk on their paws to proper hydration, dogs need special care when temperatures rise above 90 degrees.

“Make sure water is always available and be sure to take their individual needs into account,” says veterinarian Dr. Michael Nowicki of the Arbor Hills Animal Clinic.

Dr. For example, Nowicki says that smaller dogs can cool themselves down a little faster, while dogs with darker colored coats tend to warm up more quickly. All dogs are still at risk of heat exhaustion during a near-triple-digit heat wave, regardless of breed or size.

“It’s almost impossible for any dog to actually put out enough heat in these types of temperatures to stay safe outside in the long term,” said Dr. Nowicki.

Advice as simple as avoiding dark, hard surfaces when walking your dog can make the difference between a happy pup and a serious vet visit.

“The electrodes themselves can get second-degree, heaven forbid, third-degree burns, and if you can’t touch that surface with the back of your hand and keep it in contact with that surface for ten seconds and still be comfortable, it’s it’s too hot for your dog’s feet,” he said.

Dr. Nowicki says dogs should not be outside for more than 15 minutes without shade or indoor breaks once temperatures rise. In addition to giving them free access to water, he says to make sure your dog can escape the sun in the shade. Pack a bag with extra water, collapsible bowls, extra food and treats, and an extra leash if you’re going for a walk. Don’t leave your dog in the car without you, even if the car is on and the air conditioning is on.

“Those things time out, and when that turns off, you’re not aware of it, and it only takes a few minutes before your car or truck basically goes into a convection oven situation,” he said.

Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion in dogs could save your life.

Dr. Nowicki says to watch for rapid, shallow breaths, sluggishness, and your dog’s attempts to communicate his discomfort by taking frequent breaks to lie down.

“The first thing you want to do is don’t delay and get back to your vehicle and start cooling down your vehicle. Additionally, go to your vet,” said Dr. Nowicki.

There may be several times next week that you need a companion while you run errands around town, but it may be a better idea to just leave your dog at home until we get a cooler forecast. Dr. Nowicki says your dog will thank you.
