Devils trade defenseman John Marino to Utah; acquire F Paul Cotter from Vegas

The Devils have traded a defender Johannes Marino and a fifth round pick (No. 153) to the Utah Hockey Club in exchange for the 49th pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and Edmonton’s 2025 second-round pick, the team announced.

New Jersey used the pick-on in the second round the highest-ranked North American goalkeeper Mikhail Yegorov by the Omaha Lancers (USHL).

Marino, 27, was called up in the fifth round by the Oil cans in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and eventually made his debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 after playing college hockey at Harvard.

He was transferred to the Devils on July 16, 2022 in exchange for Ty Smith and a third-round pick in 2023.

Marino played in 139 games for New Jersey in two seasons, including 75 last season, and scored eight goals and 35 assists. In 328 games over five NHL seasons, Marino has collected 18 goals with 89 assists and has a +38 plus/minus.

In a separate transaction, the Devils acquired F Paul Cotter and a 2025 third-round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Alexander Holtz And Akira Schmid.

Cotter, 24, was a fourth-round pick by Vegas in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and made his debut for the club during the 2022-2023 season. In 138 career games over three seasons, Cotter has scored 22 goals and 23 assists. He played in 76 games for the Golden Knights last year, but was a -11 on the ice.

Holtz was New Jersey’s 7th overall pick in 2020 and made his debut during the 2021-22 season. He played all 82 games last year and recorded 16 goals and 12 assists. In three seasons and 110 games, Holtz has scored 19 goals with 15 assists and has a plus/minus of -26.

Schmid was drafted by the Devils in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft. He has played 43 games (33 starts) for NJ in three seasons, including 19 games (15 starts) last year. Schmid has a 14-18-3 record in net with a 2.90 GAA and an .899 save percentage.
