DFB votes in favor of the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia

The DFB announced on Friday afternoon that they will vote for Saudi Arabia to be awarded the 2034 World Cup, despite criticism, and for the 2030 World Cup to be shared by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

A decision was made on Friday morning after a committee meeting at headquarters in Frankfurt, before DFB president Bernd Neuendorf made a statement.

“We did not take the decision lightly and carefully examined the application for the 2034 World Cup.

“An exchange took place with many interest groups and experts, including human rights organizations and fans, on the basis of which a well-founded decision was made.” Neuendorf was quoted as saying.

“We take the criticism of the candidate country seriously and will continue to engage in dialogue. Our aim is to work with FIFA to improve the situation in the coming years.”

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report on Wednesday in which per lawyer.org“extensive human rights violations by Saudi employers and apathy by government authorities,” and that the organization is “particularly concerned about these violations in light of the Saudi bids for the 2034 World Cup, and the potential for further abuse of workers employed in the construction of stadiums and infrastructure for the event.”
