Sean “Diddy” Combs is accused of “repeatedly” breaking the rules while behind bars in an attempt to influence the outcome of his sex trafficking trial.
These “relentless efforts” reportedly include attempts to reach potential witnesses or potential victims, and asking his children to conduct “carefully crafted” social media campaigns to influence public opinion.
Prosecutors claim in their latest court filing that they discovered Combs’ efforts after reviewing recorded phone calls from jail.
Combs, who was arrested on September 16 on sex trafficking and racketeering charges, is spending his days at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, awaiting the start of his trial on May 5. He has pleaded not guilty and denies any wrongdoing.
Earlier this month, Combs’ attorneys proposed new conditions for his immediate release after two previous failed attempts. The proposal includes a $50 million bond deal, 24-hour house arrest and strict limits on his ability to contact anyone outside his legal team.
Citing “new evidence” and “changed circumstances,” Combs’ attorneys argued that detaining him is “unconstitutionally handicapped” from participating in his defense and preparing for trial.
But in documents filed late Friday night in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors allege that the 55-year-old Grammy winner began breaking prison rules almost as soon as he arrived at the detention center.
“The suspect has repeatedly demonstrated — even while in custody — that he will blatantly and repeatedly disregard the rules to improperly influence the outcome of his case,” prosecutors wrote in their filing. “In other words, the suspect has demonstrated that he cannot be trusted to comply with rules or conditions.”
According to the recorded conversations, the former pop culture powerhouse has also been clear about his intentions to anonymously share information that he believes would ultimately help his defense, prosecutors allege.
“Defendant’s efforts to obstruct the integrity of these proceedings also included relentless attempts to contact potential witnesses, including victims of his abuse who could provide strong testimony against him,” they wrote.
Prosecutors say they can tell from his behavior that Combs plans to silence victims and witnesses and tell the judge he should remain locked up. They also claim he is a flight risk due to his endless resources and a danger to the public due to his alleged history of violence.
Combs’ legal team did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday.
A bail hearing is scheduled for late next week.
