Disney Cruise Line’s new ship saved four people at sea on Sunday afternoon.
Disney Treasure responded to a call about a ship in distress while en route from Eemshaven in the Netherlands to Port Canaveral in Florida, a cruise line spokesperson said. The ship will make its maiden voyage from the Port of Orlando in December.
“We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide assistance to the boat passengers in danger,” Captain Marco Nogara said in a statement. “Our crew members worked together in the rescue effort and skillfully demonstrated their training and commitment to safety.”
The 50-foot catamaran, named the Serenity, took on water after its escape hatch blew a gasket, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The ship was about 270 miles off the coast of Bermuda.
“The Treasure launched a rescue boat and rescued all four people aboard the Serenity sometime between 1:00 PM and 1:45 PM,” the Coast Guard said in an emailed statement. The cruise line and the Coast Guard did not specify who the passengers were.
The news comes after an Oceania Cruises ship rescued nearly 70 migrants trying to reach Spain’s Canary Islands in June after their fishing boat ran aground in rough waters. A Carnival Cruise Line ship also rescued 25 people from a small boat stranded off the coast of Mexico in May.
