Dodgers vs. Mets score, live updates: Los Angeles looks to advance to World Series, shuts down New York in NLCS Game 5

The New York Mets are officially in business after another dominant performance by the Los Angeles Dodgers in their 10-2 Game 4 win on Thursday. With the Dodgers holding a 3-1 series lead, about to advance to their fourth World Series in the last eight seasons, the Mets could be down to their last 27 outs if they can’t muster the kind of offensive performance that won. them Game 2 7-3. In the first four games of the series, Los Angeles defeated New York 30-9.

In Game 5, the Dodgers have Jack Flaherty on the mound, with the righty looking to continue his postseason success (1-1, 2.92 ERA, 8 SO, 12.1 IP). Meanwhile, the Mets are pinning their hopes on left-hander David Peterson, who was solid for New York in brief appearances in October (1-0, 2.08 ERA, 5 SO, 8.2 IP).

  • And then David Peterson walks Teoscar Hernandez to load the bases with two outs. The Mets pull him after 79 pitches (the first time he’s thrown more than 50 since September 29) and bring in Reed Garrett to face Freddie Freeman.

  • Shohei Ohtani follows with a bloop single and Mookie Betts with a walk. The Mets probably don’t want to let the Dodgers back into this game.

  • Also a lively discussion after the homer. It might have something to do with Pages turning his bat.

  • Mets 8, Dodgers 2

Andy Pages doesn’t care what the score is. The Dodgers rookie No. 9 hitter hits a 450-foot homer to center field to cut the lead to six runs.

  • The third inning is over and the Mets are in complete control after a five-run frame. The Dodgers offense scored more than eight runs yesterday, but they could be ready to try to win this series at home.

  • Mets 8, Dodgers 1

Another one from Brandon Nimmo. Considering how the Dodgers have approached every postseason game, it’s impossible not to interpret keeping Flaherty in as a white flag.

  • Mets 7, Dodgers 1

Francisco Lindor follows with a stand-up triple. The Mets are 7-for-15 with four walks against Jack Flaherty after going 2-for-22 against him in Game 1.

  • Mets6, Dodgers1

Francisco Alvarez adds another, and it’s all Mets here at Citi Field. It looks like this series is heading back to Los Angeles.

  • Anthony Banda was warming up, but he has moved into the bullpen. The Dodgers might just let Flaherty carry this instead of making their bullpen work with two elimination games likely coming up in Los Angeles.

  • Mets 5, Dodgers 1

This is going to get bad for the Dodgers quickly. Starling Marte blasts a grounder down the third base line and makes Flaherty pay for his two walks. Flaherty faced fifteen batters and allowed five hits, four walks and five runs.

  • Jack Flaherty has a total of two swing-and-misses through 14 batters. He allowed Pete Alonso a walk in the third inning after taking an 0-2 lead, before Alonso stopped two low curveballs and fouled another well below the zone. Then Jesse Winker walks.

Two on, none out for the Mets on third down.

  • Simple enough inning for David Peterson in the top of the third – just one single by Tommy Edman.

He is at 52 pitches in three innings, which is the most he has thrown in the entire postseason. He hasn’t thrown that many pitches since he started the regular season.

  • A silent mistake by Shohei Ohtani in the first.

  • Jack Flaherty works around the leadoff double to keep the second inning scoreless. In a must-win situation, the Dodgers might have already pulled him, but at this point they might just want length from him.

We’ll see what they do when he makes it through the order the third time, but his four-sea speed is two ticks lower at 93mph.

  • Lindor then falls a few yards short of the right-field fence. Ten batters in, Flaherty has allowed flyballs or line drives with exit velocities of 103.8 mph, 98.4 mph, 90.1 mph, 183.6 mph, 98.8 mph and 170.7 mph. That’s in addition to two walks.

  • And then Francisco Lindor comes a few degrees away from clubbing a two-run homer down the right field line. It flies just right of the foul pole, but this is a hard contact that Flaherty allows.

  • The Mets keep it going in the second inning with a double by Francisco Alvarez. It’s at this point that you start to wonder how long Jack Flaherty will last today given how aggressive the Dodgers have been with their bullpen, but that unit has shouldered a big load so far this series.

  • Mookie Betts popped out to end the top of the second inning. There is still a lot of play to be played, but the Dodgers are now 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position against David Peterson.

  • Strange little plate look there for Ohtani. After seeing the Dodgers’ first run go in on his first pitch, he took a timeout because he appeared to have something in his eye, waved off the LA coach, waved at a 3-1 slider out of the zone and then drew his fourth. run in two races.
