Domestic violence suspect fatally shot by officers in Victorville

Officers shot and killed a domestic violence suspect after a confrontation at a Victorville home on Sept. 7, sheriff’s officials confirmed Saturday night.

Lavon Green, 36, of Victorville was killed in the officer-involved shooting that happened shortly after 9 p.m. on Sept. 7 at a home in the 15600 block of Kadota Avenue, just west of 9th Avenue, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers responded to a report of a “domestic dispute,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement issued Saturday night.

“When officers arrived, they located the female victim outside the residence who had been assaulted by the suspect, Lavon Green,” the statement said. They spoke with the suspect through the front door of the home.

“Deputies attempted to de-escalate the incident for several minutes before Green retreated further into the residence. Green remained barricaded and later appeared at a window of the residence armed with a handgun, and a (fatal use of force confrontation) occurred.”

Officers entered the home and found Green dead.

No further details have been released.

Consistent with other people shot by officers or killed in sheriff’s custody this year, Green was not listed in San Bernardino County coroner’s records. Therefore, no official cause of death was available.

The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office was dissolved as an independent agency in 2006 and merged with the Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department now oversees the release of information about deaths throughout the county.

In 2021, the sheriff’s department decided to significantly limit the information released by coroners after the two offices released conflicting accounts about the fatal shooting of Barstow resident Juan Rodriguez Jr. in a Yucca Valley parking lot on June 9 of that year.

In neighboring jurisdictions such as Riverside County and Los Angeles County, the sheriff’s departments and the coroner’s departments are separate entities. This traditional setup is intended to avoid conflicts of interest.
