Donald Trump campaign reports raising $130 million in August

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s campaign said it raised $130 million in August, a drop from the previous month but an amount that his advisers say puts the GOP candidate in good shape for the remaining two months of the general election campaign.

The majority of that amount — 98% — came in the form of donations under $200, Trump’s campaign said Wednesday, with an average donation of $56.

The fundraising release comes as the general election battle between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris reaches its climax. It has been just over six weeks since President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid and elevated Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket.

Trump has proven to be a prolific fundraiser, but the novelty of Harris’ bid has led to a surge in money from Democratic donors.

Harris’ campaign has not yet released fundraising figures for August. But in the five-week period that began with Biden’s exit from the race and ended on the Sunday after the Democratic National Convention, Harris’ campaign said it raised $540 million.

On Tuesday, Harris’ campaign announced it would donate nearly $25 million to boost Democrats in lower-district elections, the campaign said, the largest amount ever in a presidential cycle.

Trump’s campaign has had its own fundraising blessings. In July, Trump’s campaign and affiliates said they had raised $138.7 million — less than what Harris took in during her inaugural week White House bid.

Trump’s advisers reported that the campaign had $327 million in cash at the beginning of August and that the campaign ended the month with $295 million in cash.

“With Republicans united and a growing number of independents and disaffected Democrats crossing party lines, the Trump-Vance campaign has momentum going into the final stretch of the race,” Trump senior campaign adviser Brian Hughes said in a statement. “These August fundraising numbers are a reflection of that movement and will bring President Trump’s America First movement back to the White House so we can undo the terrible failures of Harris and Biden.”
