According to Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus declared that “we shall be judged by our words,” while the Decalogue demands we “shall not bear false witness against our neighbor.” The Bible proclaims: “He who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.” However, the overriding commandment remains: “You shall love one another as I [Jesus] have loved you.”
What a pity that these sublime words have not enlightened Donald Trump and his followers. He demeans praiseworthy individuals; he is a pernicious liar who savagely attacks critics and rivals.
Trump’s despicable vitriol warrants covering our Statue of Liberty − he has disgraced our national icon with his contemptible behavior. He exalts himself and his followers, while lambasting and denigrating immigrants, especially those with a different complexion. He and comrade JD Vance increasingly excoriate immigrants making us believe that at any moment we will be slaughtered by them. They spout ad nauseum fake news (unverifiable statements). They, not the Haitians, have deliberately wounded, nay tortured, the Springfield community while simultaneously demeaning FEMA’s heroic work in hurricane-stricken North Carolina. Lies, lies, and more lies. They molest America and take pride in their infamy.
The Republican Party wants to teach the Bible in schools, but its adherents refuse to follow its principles. They hunger to enslave Americans with their so-called “Christian” nationalism and Project 2025 while underscoring and sanctifying their forms of puritanism, racism, intolerance, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, misogyny, xenophobia, book-banning . . .
We should remember that when individuals, and notably politicians, repeat lies, especially big lies many, many times over a long period of time, people will eventually believe them: stolen elections? vote fraud? immigrant hordes? surging crime? Etc.?
Spare us, we pray (while “they” prey on us).
