CHICAGO (CBS) –An anonymous donor has made a $100 million gift to the University of Chicago in support of the school’s Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression.

This gift is believed to be the largest higher education gift ever in support of free speech.

The forum was launched in 2023 by UChicago President Paul Alivisatos. The stated purpose is to bring together students, faculty, higher education leaders and guests to discuss the challenges of free inquiry and free expression – and also to highlight the values ​​of free inquiry and free expression. in practice, the U of C said.

The U of C noted that the forum hosted more than a dozen events during its first year, tackling difficult topics such as the war in Israel and Gaza and landmark rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court.

The university also noted that the donation comes at a time when opportunities and threats to free speech are an issue at American universities and around the world.

UChicago temporarily faced criticism, specifically after the school withholding at least one diploma from a pro-Palestinian protester who participated in a tent camp protest in the Main Quad earlier this year.
