Downtrend cools as gas, crude prices rise as storm looms in Gulf

The average price of regular gasoline in Florida rose six cents early this week but fell back to $3.13 a gallon on Sunday, according to AAA-The Auto Club Group’s weekly briefing.

“Crude oil and gasoline futures rose last week, helping to reverse the downward trend in prices at the pump,” said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for the group.

“The price increases are attributed to optimism that the Federal Reserve’s rate cut would boost the global economy and energy demand,” Jenkins added. U.S. crude oil prices rose more than $3 a barrel last week, hitting $71.92 a barrel on Friday.

The briefing did not address the storm that is forming in the Gulf of Mexico, which current models have headed toward the state’s Panhandle.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee said Monday that a hurricane is expected to strengthen to a severe Category 2 storm, on the borderline of Category 3, as it approaches the state’s Gulf Coast Thursday morning.
