Drier weather returns for July 4

Drier and warmer weather will return to most of New Mexico on July 4. A few isolated storms are possible in southern New Mexico.

Fewer storms developed in New Mexico on Wednesday as drier air moves in from the northwest. Even drier air is on the way for the Fourth of July. However, a few isolated storms will still develop in far southeastern New Mexico, with an isolated chance of rain over the Sacramento Mountains. Temperatures will also be much warmer for the Fourth of July, with sunny to mostly sunny skies across the state.

A backdoor cold front will move into northeastern New Mexico Thursday night. This front will move into the Rio Grande Valley Thursday night and bring gusty winds to the Albuquerque Metro Friday morning at midnight. The winds will subside by 7 a.m. Friday. Showers and storms will return to eastern New Mexico behind the backdoor front Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Locally heavy rain is possible with these storms, including overburn scar areas in both the Sacramento and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Another backdoor cold front will move through New Mexico Sunday night, bringing much stronger easterly winds to the Albuquerque Metro area through Monday morning. However, it will also bring more moisture to the state. This will set the stage for more isolated afternoon storms through the middle of next week.
