Driver, 20, arrested after fatal single-vehicle crash in Waipahu

A 20-year-old man has died and another has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and manslaughter following a single-vehicle crash in Waipahu early this morning.

Honolulu Police reported that at approximately 3:44 a.m., a vehicle traveling north on Leokane Street, near Pupuole Street, “lost control at a high rate of speed and struck a wooden utility pole.”

A 20-year-old passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was treated by emergency medical services and taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead, according to a report from the Honolulu Police Department’s traffic homicide unit.

The driver, also a 20-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of a drug and first-degree manslaughter, HPD said. Police did not say whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.

According to HPD officials, speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this crash. It is unknown if drugs played a role.

This was the 30th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 39 during the same period in 2023.
