UNION, Ill. (CBS) — A freight train struck a pickup in McHenry County Monday evening, destroying the truck but causing no injuries.
Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts, Union Fire Protection District and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office were called to the crash at the Olson Road intersection near Union at 5:13 p.m.
Firefighters on the scene saw a stationary freight train and a heavily damaged pickup truck near the intersection. The driver, described as a “young man,” had freed himself from the pickup before crews got there and was “amazingly uninjured,” according to the Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts.
The young driver refused medical treatment after being examined by paramedics. The train crew also reported no injuries.
The eastbound train was cleared at 6:45 p.m., and the roadway was cleared by 7 p.m., the fire protection district said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
