Driver arrested for drunken homicide after motorcyclist killed in Lubbock County crash

A motorcyclist is dead and another driver is in custody after a crash Friday night southeast of Lubbock.

Danny Adam Vasquez, Sr., 49, of Slaton, died when the 2016 Yamaha motorcycle he was riding struck the rear of a pickup truck that was overturned in the roadway near the intersection of U.S. Highway 84 and County Road 7200 around 9:30 p.m. Friday, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

An investigation into the crash revealed that the driver of the 2024 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck, driven by Dane Lay Powell, 60, of Snyder, was in the center intersection of U.S. 84 at the intersection while Vasquez was traveling eastbound on U.S. 84 in the left lane, DPS said. Vasquez’s motorcycle then struck the rear of Powell’s truck, which was reportedly stationary in the left lane that Vasquez was traveling in.

Vasquez lost control of his motorcycle, crashed and was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries, DPS said.

Jail records show Powell was arrested by DPS officers on Friday and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter by intoxication, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

The release did not disclose what evidence led to Powell’s arrest. However, a DPS spokesperson said Powell was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

He remained in custody Saturday night. Bail has been set at $50,000.
