Driver killed when pickup veered off South Carolina Road, Highway Patrol says

One person was killed in an early morning crash on a road in the Midlands on Sunday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 2 a.m. in Kershaw County, Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said.

According to Ridgeway, a 2014 Toyota pickup was traveling north on Veterans Row. That’s close to US 1 in the Elgin area.

At the intersection with Chestnut Road, the pickup ran off the left side of Veterans Row and struck a guardrail, Ridgeway said.

According to Ridgeway, the driver died at the scene.

The Kershaw County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

No other injuries were reported.

It was not stated whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.

No information was available on what caused the pickup to leave the road, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

At least 386 people had died on South Carolina roadways through June 2 in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least four people have died in accidents in Kershaw County in 2024, according to DPS data. Eleven deaths were reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
