A New York man is facing drug possession, theft and misdemeanor assault charges after allegedly leaving the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Bergen County Sunday night, authorities said.

Emelio Lutchmansingh, 24, of Queens, was arrested after the crash in Teaneck at 11:13 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Bergen County District Attorney’s Office. He was hospitalized, along with two occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash.

Responding officers determined that a BMW M3 driven by Lutchmansingh was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 4 and collided head-on with a Jeep Compass, the news release said. Lutchmansingh fled on foot but was apprehended a short distance from the crash by members of the Teaneck Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.

Lutchmansingh and all five occupants of the Jeep were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two members of the Jeep were seriously injured as a result of the crash and remain in hospital, the Public Prosecution Service said.

Investigation has shown that the BMW probably contained cocaine. The license plates on the vehicle had previously been reported stolen, the press release states.

Lutchmansingh was charged with third-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and alteration of a motor vehicle; fourth-degree resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, and two counts of assault with an automobile; and three counts of disorderly conduct with an automobile. In addition, several summonses were issued.

Lutchmansingh remains hospitalized Monday morning and is in the custody of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office awaiting his initial court appearance.
