DTE Energy is preparing for sweltering heat in Metro Detroit

(CBS DETROIT) — Southeast Michigan will experience high temperatures next week and DTE is already preparing for possible power outages. The company says there are a few things you can do to keep yourself and your home cool.

“I mean, it’s hot. I don’t have central air in my house, so I’m definitely thinking about ways to stay cool and where to spend my time, things like that,” said Corktown resident Samir Deshpande.

For residents like Deshpande, next week’s sweltering heat is worrying. As temperatures rise above 90 degrees, the metro area will use a lot of energy, according to DTE.

“The blinds in the window blinds on the south side of the house heat the house when the sun comes in and your air conditioning will have to work more. Running appliances that create heat during those peak hours. Like your dishwasher or clothes dryer,” says Jason Kupser, manager of DTE’s Energy Efficient Department.

DTE is already preparing its crews. It advises the metropolitan area to cool its homes before the heat of the day. They ensure that your air conditioner is free of debris such as leaves or debris.

“Certainly, your air filter and furnace, if you can get that to work more efficiently, your furnace doesn’t have to work as well,” Kupser said.

Officials said cooling your home to about 75 degrees before 3 p.m. can make a big difference.

Once the humidity is outside, DTE says the thermostat can be raised to keep your energy bills low. With the heat wave coming, it will be a constant struggle for some.

“You know, you could open the window, then there’s nothing more you can do, and at that point it’s like maybe I spend more time in the office,” Deshpande said.

DTE recommends keeping windows closed to prevent high humidity. It also recommends only running fans when someone is in the room. The less energy you use, the less impact this has on your bill.

“There are potential disruptions that can occur because of the heat; sometimes there are disruptions because of that.

As a reminder, DTE’s peak rates are from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. To keep your energy rates low, it is advisable to cool your home beforehand.
