Edwards sounds angry at ‘terrible’ referees after loss to Warriors originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Anthony Edwards made his feelings about the game director abundantly clear in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 113-103 loss to the Warriors Saturday at Target Center.
The superstar guard spoke to reporters in the Timberwolves’ locker room after the game and spoke out about referees Sean Wright and Sean Corbin.
“They’re fucking awful. All of them,” Edwards said. “Except for the woman. But the other two guys, terrible. Apologies for the reason they call a foul, a reason they don’t call a foul. They don’t want to talk back to my coach, they don’t want to talk back to me. I said one thing to the referee, and he gave me a tech.
“They’re just sensitive and they’re terrible. They never give us the [benefit of the doubt]they punish me and [Julius Randle] because you’re stronger every night, don’t get any calls. That’s how I feel about civil servants. Every game we play.”
Edwards committed four personal fouls and shot four free throw attempts, while Randle committed just one personal foul but crossed the line nine times. Minnesota shot more free throws as a team (25) than Golden State (23), while the referees called more personal fouls on the Warriors (23) than on the Timberwolves (18).
Despite the referees calling more fouls in the Timberwolves’ favor, Edwards believes the whistles on Saturday night were a symptom of a larger problem he and Minnesota have been dealing with this season.
“Yes, it’s been consistent all year, but tonight was bad,” Edwards added. “They made bad fouls and we got nothing. That’s exactly how I feel about the referees. The two guys, not the woman.”
“I’m being punished because I’m stronger than my opponent. So they give them the benefit of the doubt. They bump me the same way as everyone else, and I never get the calls. I don’t know what needs to be done, but something needs to be done happen, because that’s terrible.”
Edwards was previously fined $40,000 for publicly criticizing the referees in January of last season, and following his comments on Saturday, he could face a stiffer penalty this time as a repeat offence.
The Warriors, meanwhile, enjoyed a happy flight back to the Bay Area.
