An elderly man died in a house fire in Hyde Park on Monday after his wife escaped from the back of the 101-year-old home.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the home on 74th Street near 5th Avenue just after 10:30 a.m.

The elderly woman was able to escape the home without injury, but her bedridden husband was found dead in the front of the home, according to LAFD.

It took 43 firefighters 14 minutes to extinguish the blaze in the single-storey house, which had no smoke detectors.

According to the LAFD, volunteers from the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team will assist the woman, family and neighbors. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
