Elon Musk says at a Trump rally in New York that he could save the country trillion through a department of efficiency

  • Elon Musk spoke briefly on Sunday during a campaign rally for Donald Trump in New York.

  • In his speech, Musk said he would save the US $2 trillion through a government efficiency department.

  • Musk and Trump have both suggested that Musk could join Trump’s Cabinet if he is re-elected.

Elon Musk gave a brief speech at a campaign rally in New York for former President Donald Trump on Sunday, during which the Tesla CEO said he would save the United States $2 trillion in tax spending through a department of government efficiency.

While introducing Musk, Howard Lutnick, the CEO of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, described the SpaceX CEO as the “greatest capitalist in the history of the United States of America.” As he took the stage, Lutnick asked Musk, “How much do you think we can get out of this wasted $6.5 trillion Harris-Biden budget?”

“I think we can make at least $2 trillion,” Musk replied, receiving cheers from the crowd. “I mean, at the end of the day, you’re going to be taxed. You’re going to be taxed. All government spending is taxes. So whether it’s direct taxes or all government spending, it’s going to be inflation or it’s direct taxes.”

Musk added: “Your money is being wasted, and the government’s Department of Efficiency is going to fix that. We are going to take the government out of your wallet.”

Both Musk and Trump have suggested in recent weeks that Musk could retain a seat in Trump’s Cabinet if re-elected. In a speech in September, Trump said that if he wins re-election, he plans to do a government efficiency committee overseen by Musk, which the Tesla CEO has said he “can’t wait” to get started on.

Musk in his speech on Sunday did not discuss specific policy changes or cuts he planned to make if he were to join a hypothetical second Trump administration.

Musk and Trump campaign representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
