Erie man accused of threatening woman with stolen gun sentenced to prison

An Erie man accused of stealing or attempting to steal items from vehicles in the Erie region, including stealing a gun. Authorities allege he then pointed at a woman in Greene Township will spend some more time in prison for his crimes.

Davon D. Stepp, 34, was sentenced Friday morning by Erie County Judge John J. Mead to six to 23 months in prison, followed by three years of probation, based on his guilty pleas in October to charges in four criminal cases. Stepp was given credit for the nearly six months he has already spent in the Erie County Jail since his June 17 arraignment.

Stepp pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony count of theft from a vehicle and a misdemeanor count of simple assault in a June 17 incident, when Pennsylvania State Police accused him of stealing a gun from a vehicle earlier that morning at a 62 point to aim. year-old woman who confronted him in Greene Township.

Troopers wrote in the criminal complaint in that case that the woman reported seeing a man try the door handles of her car on camera at her home. She said she saw the man again later that morning, and as she drove next to him, she said he pulled out a gun and pointed it at her, according to information in the complaint’s affidavit.

Assistant District Attorney Michael Burns and Mead both expressed concern about the severity of that incident prior to Friday’s sentencing.

Stepp was also sentenced based on his guilty pleas to felony counts of resisting arrest, loitering and prowling at night, and theft from a motor vehicle, and to a summary charge of failure to comply with a police order in three Erie Bureau of Police cases . In those cases, he was accused of entering or attempting to enter vehicles in Erie in September and December 2023 and fleeing officers who tried to arrest him in both incidents, case documents show.
