Everett mayor wins $1.1 million in defamation lawsuit settlement

Following a settlement of a defamation lawsuit, Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria has been awarded $1.1 million to the Everett Leader Herald, its owner, publisher and editor.

The settlement comes after the Everett Leader Herald was accused of publishing falsified stories intended to damage the mayor’s reputation.

Under the terms of the settlement, the 139-year-old newspaper company will be forced to close and the owner, publisher and editor will be ordered to pay the $1.1 million all within seven days.

In exchange for the payment and the agreement to close the newspaper, Mayor DeMaria will waive the defamation trial, which would have taken place on January 21.

Mayor DeMaria and his attorneys will hold a press conference tomorrow, December 16, to discuss the settlement.

This is a development story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
