Ex-Red Wings defenseman on fire with new team

Sometimes the grass is actually greener on the other side.

That’s an impressive thing for Shayne Gostisbehere to say, the former Detroit Red Wings defenseman who now plays for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Especially considering the 2023-2024 season was incredible for the season they call “Ghost.”

In 81 games, he scored 10 goals and 46 assists for 56 points. He did so with an average of 19:05 on the ice, which was in no small part due to his efforts on the power play.

Averaging 3:21 per game with the man advantage, he collected 29 power play points.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brindamour is a very intelligent coach. That is evident in the four minutes per game he gives his new defenseman on the power play.

Gostisbehere has used his time wisely, recording nine points in the first nine games. Five of those points come from the man advantage.

He is attached at the hip to fellow Hurricanes rookie Sean Walker. Gostisbehere has spent time with all the other defenders on the team. However, he has spent 85.8 percent of his time with Walker.

Gostisbehere ranks fourth among Hurricanes defensemen in ice time. With an average of 18:48 minutes per match, he is only behind Jaccob Slavin (21:31), Brent Burns (21:06) and Dmitry Orlov (19:39).

Because the season is still very young, anything can still happen. It’s time to see how green this grass is for Gostisbehere.
