Expansion of the Foothill Gold Line is nearing completion in the San Gabriel Valley

The Foothill Gold Line expansion project in the San Gabriel Valley is nearing completion and is on track to be ready for service in early 2025.

Officials say the project, a 9-mile extension that will connect Glendora to Pomona, is less than eight months from completion and is about 85% complete as of Monday.

Once everything is completed, the rail line will be transferred for use by LA Metro, according to an email from FGL officials.

So far, work has begun on four new stations, which will be located in Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne and Pomona. Each station, to which associated parking facilities will be linked, will also provide facilities for travelers arriving by bicycle, car, bus or on foot.

Crews recently completed installation of the train control system, one of three essential elements for the light rail system.

“The tracks were completed last year and this month crews completed installation of the train control system – while also nearing completion of the power system,” officials said in a statement.

The train control system will monitor train movements, provide warnings to staff on the trains or at control centers, and control crossing gates and signals.

Officials also noted that before testing of the trains can begin, construction crews will have to connect the new project to the already operational Metro A line that runs near the area.

A funding request submitted by CalSTA, the agency that oversees the $4 billion program that seeks to connect Pomona to Montclair, was not approved as of April 30, officials noted. Instead, they hope to reach that step by the end of July.

“Once financing is secured and a design team is hired, the construction-ready Pomona-Montclair segment will take approximately five years to complete,” the statement said.
