Expect heat index values of up to 112 degrees through Saturday evening

The National Weather Service issued an updated extreme heat warning Saturday at 1:58 p.m. The warning is for Montague, Cooke, Grayson, Fannin, Lamar, Young, Jack, Wise, Denton, Collin, Hunt, Delta, Hopkins, Palo Pinto, Parker, Tarrant, Dallas, Rockwall, Kaufman, Van Zandt, Rains, Hood, Somervell, Johnson, Ellis, Henderson, Bosque, Hill, Navarro, Freestone, Anderson, McLennan, Limestone and Leon counties.

The Excessive Heat Warning Saturday calls for dangerously warm conditions with heat index values of 110 to 112 degrees. For Heat Advisory Sunday, heat index values up to 109 are expected for North and East Central Texas until 7:00 PM tonight.

“Extreme heat and humidity significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for people who work or participate in activities outdoors,” the NWS said.

This warning is in effect until 7:00 PM

Tips from the NWS to stay safe during a heat wave

• Make sure you drink enough: make sure you stay well hydrated.

• Seek shelter: Stay indoors in an air-conditioned room to stay cool.

• Keep an eye on others: stay out of the sun and keep an eye on your family members and neighbors.

• Ensure the safety of children and pets: Do not leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles, as the temperature inside the car can become lethal within minutes.

• Be careful outdoors: If you work or spend time outdoors, take extra safety precautions.

• Find the right time: If possible, consider moving strenuous activities to the early morning or evening.

• Recognize warning signs: Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

• Dress comfortably: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.

To reduce the risk of working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone who is overpowered by the heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
