(Reuters) – President-elect Donald Trump will take office on January 20 after defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Here’s a timeline of events between now and Inauguration Day:
December 11: States must submit certified lists of presidential electors to the Archivist of the United States by this date as part of a 2022 federal law aimed at preventing a repeat of the chaos following Trump’s attempts to overturn his defeat of Undo 2020.
December 17: Electors, who make up the Electoral College, meet in their respective states and the District of Columbia to elect the president and vice president.

December 25: Electoral votes must be received by this date by the President of the Senate – a role filled by the Vice President, currently Harris – and the Archivist.
2025
January 6: Harris chairs the Electoral College during a joint session of Congress, certifies the results and announces who has been elected.
Ahead of the count on January 6, 2021, then-President Trump excoriated his Vice President, Mike Pence, for refusing to try to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s victory.
On that day, Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the count. Biden’s victory was confirmed early the next day.
Congress has since passed reforms that require the approval of one-fifth of the House and Senate to consider a challenge to a state’s results — a much higher bar than before, when at least one member of both the Senate and the House of Representatives together to issue a challenge.
January 20: Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take their respective oaths of office during a swearing-in ceremony set to begin at 12:00 PM ET (5:00 PM GMT).
