Faeser calls for more ‘solidarity’ from the EU in receiving refugees from Ukraine

If Russian gains in the war in Ukraine cause a new large wave of refugees to the European Union, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants a fairer distribution of refugees among the EU countries.

Faeser said she does not expect such a development, but said the current distribution of Ukrainian refugees currently places a heavy burden on only a handful of host countries.

“If people have to flee because (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has increased the fighting and winter is coming, then we would ensure solidarity in the EU,” Faser said.

Currently, 54% of all Ukrainian refugees in the EU are hosted in Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, Faeser said.

“This should then be spread to other countries,” she said.

Faeser also noted that Gemrany wants to provide Ukraine with comprehensive support, including technical support to maintain the supply of heat and electricity despite Russian air strikes.

According to Faeser, this help will ensure that more people can stay in Western Ukraine.
