Concord police say 35-year-old John Stevenson was struck as he walked home along Davidson Highway Friday afternoon. He was just a few steps from his back door when he was hit.

Officers say the driver who hit him, 41-year-old David Royce Brown, has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence and manslaughter.

Stevenson’s family told veteran crime reporter Glenn Counts that he had just gotten off work and was walking home when the incident occurred. They believe that given his criminal record, Brown should not have been on the streets.

“It’s a broken system that means my brother is no longer here,” said Damon Brooks, Stevenson’s brother. “How can you be walking along the side of the road at 1:27 pm in the middle of the day and get hit by a drunk driver?”
