Family of retired LASD officer missing in Greece frustrated by lack of search resources

Relatives are still desperately searching for Albert Calibet, the retired Los Angeles County sheriff who went missing while hiking in Greece nearly a week ago, and search efforts are becoming increasingly frustrating, they say.

Oliver Calibet has been looking for his older brother for eight days last seen during a walk on the Greek island of Amorgos last Tuesday.

He is one of several people searching the area, including Calibet’s girlfriend, other family members and two LASD search and rescue members who flew to Greece and helped him search every inch of the 79’s rugged terrain kilometer long square island.

Retired Los Angeles County Deputy Albert Calibet went missing after taking a hike on the Greek island of Armogos earlier this week.

But he is increasingly frustrated by the lack of help from both the Greek and US governments, despite claims that active searches are underway.

“They say to me, ‘No, there are dogs, there is this.’ I say, ‘There isn’t, I’m here. Can you do something for me,'” Calibet said while speaking to KCAL News. “The answer is basically no.”

His brother is one of many foreigners visiting the Greek islands who have died or went missing in recent weeks as a sweltering heat wave lingered over the region.

Despite this, he says his brother Albert, who continues to work part-time for the sheriff even after retiring in 2018, traveled regularly to Amorgos Island and knew the terrain extremely well.

That’s why he’s afraid something worse could have happened.

“Police tell me he may have thrown the phone and jumped off the cliff,” Calibet said. “And I think that’s a possibility, or maybe a criminal offense occurred.”

He says police tell him this is unlikely, but he’s not sure why this isn’t just as possible as the other option.

“Anything is possible,” he said.

Calibet is still hopeful that he will find his brother soon, but he is worried about losing more resources as most of his search team will fly to America in the coming days.

For him, he plans to stay until his brother is found.

‘He is strong. That’s all, I have to find him.’

He ordered a lawyer on Monday so he can try to bring his own search dogs to the island, and friends have started raising money in hopes of sending him more resources.
