It’s been a tough week for Windel Mackey.
“I sit there feeling like I’m going to carry this with me forever because I feel like I wasn’t there to protect my son,” he said.
FROM THE EARLIER ACT: Victims in a double murder in Salisbury shot at each other
His son, Skylar Mackey, 21, was killed in a double shooting on Third Street Sunday morning.
“I just hope they get everyone involved and just wrap this thing up because this is pointless,” he said.
Windel Mackey spoke with veteran Channel 9 crime reporter Glenn Counts on Wednesday night as he said he wanted to set the record straight about his son’s involvement or lack of involvement in the case.
“During the incident that occurred, he never had a gun in his hands,” the father said. “He never fired a shot. He was a completely innocent victim and was essentially caught in the crossfire.”
Windel Mackey said his son worked for a fast food chain and was respected in his job. He loved rap music and dreamed of a career in the industry.
“This is devastating for us,” he said. “I really just wanted to set the record straight: that he’s not a gangbanger. He wasn’t what people think he is.”
The police ruled the case as a double murder.
The other victim was 20-year-old Shamarion Hooker.
“I feel sorry for the other family,” Windel Mackey said. “I do not know the circumstances that led to this and I feel sorry for everyone involved. None of this should ever have happened.”
Police sources said Sunday that the two men shot each other.
Authorities would not provide additional details, including whether they are looking for any additional suspects.
