Fire on Yerba Buena Island closes lanes on Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO – All eastbound lanes of the Bay Bridge were closed Saturday afternoon as San Francisco Fire Departments responded to a growing grass fire on Yerba Buena Island.

Lanes on Interstate 80 were closed about 2:30 p.m. as San Francisco firefighters responded from boats and the bridge, but a fire department statement said fireboats had difficulty reaching the blaze.

Their hoses and other equipment closed all eastbound lanes on the bridge near Treasure Island Road.

The fire was burning on a hillside in the southwest corner of the island, near the U.S. Coast Guard station, and had grown to about an acre by 3:40 p.m., according to CHP traffic reports.

California Highway Patrol officers were working to open at least two lanes of the freeway to allow limited movement as of 3:30 p.m., but the eastbound freeway remained closed at that time, significantly impacting the westbound lanes.
