Los Angeles City Firefighters battle a fire in Chinatown that started early Friday morning in an apartment building under construction and quickly spread to an adjacent apartment building.

According to LAFD Captain Adam VanGerpen, five people were injured and one person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Crews arrived at the building under construction in the 800 block of Bunker Hill Avenue at 3:43 a.m. VanGerpen said flames quickly spread to the adjacent three-story apartment building, forcing residents to evacuate. Firefighters are continuing to make sure all residents are out of the building.

Other apartment buildings have also been hit, with firefighters working on the fire at each building.

“There are three buildings in total that are affected at this time, but there will be some smoke damage and there are also firefighters in a fourth building,” VanGerpen said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
