Flood peaks on the Moselle tributary in the Saarland in western Germany

According to the district administration, the flood situation in the Trier-Saarburg district in western Germany subsided in the early hours of Saturday.

“The water levels of the Saar and other bodies of water are reaching their peak or starting to decline,” the district’s technical operations center announced shortly before 2 a.m. (0000 GMT) on Saturday.

The evacuation of the lower-lying neighborhoods in Schoden an der Saar was successfully completed early on Saturday morning.

According to the district administration, 220 people were housed in a gymnasium in Saarburg-Beurig. A retirement home was also evacuated in Saarburg and a hotel in Trittenheim on the Middle Moselle. About 50 people were moved to temporary shelter in a gymnasium.

According to a statement from the district administration, around 1,000 people were deployed on Friday evening. Additional reinforcements and support came from neighboring districts.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has canceled an election campaign appearance planned for Saturday in Saarland.

Instead, he will visit the district together with State Premier Anke Rehlinger to get an idea of ​​the situation on the ground, a government spokesperson announced in Saarbrücken on Friday evening.
