Flooded Waterville remains in state of emergency as it braces for more rain

WATERVILLE, Minnesota — Officials in Waterville say they are still in a state of emergency as the town struggles with historical flood.

During an open house on Monday evening, residents were able to connect with agencies including FEMA, the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and more.

“It’s tough for everybody right now. It’s hard to watch,” said Mayor William Conlin.

Le Sueur County opened a mess delivery location in Waterville where residents can deposit old sandbags, appliances and household waste, among other things.

“We’re not in recovery. We’re still in an emergency situation here. There’s still water in the houses, houses are completely under water. They can’t even get to it,” Conlin said.

Leaders are concerned more rain their progress is washed away. According to FEMA data, most homeowners in Waterville not have federal flood insurance and there are only 33 active policies in the city. Local officials hope that the disaster declarations will help the 95% of people who are uninsured.

“The cleaning is getting really bad. It’s mold,” said Waterville resident Gail Wernau.

She has been pumping water out of her basement for days, an exhausting battle that has ended in the loss of important items.

“Photographs, books, jewelry. We lost a box that had all my sculptures in it that I had been messing around with for a few years,” she said.

She is far from alone. Police Chief and Emergency Manager John Manning says the community is coming together to get through this difficult time.

“This is a traumatic situation that people are going through, but it’s heartwarming to see them pulling people together holding hands,” Manning said.
