RAPIDIAN, Minn. Floods on the Blue Earth River caused the Rapidan Dam to fail Monday morning, with Le Sueur County residents urged to evacuate, the county’s emergency management office said.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for areas downstream until 4:30 p.m

The Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office says debris began piling up Sunday at the dam, about 10 miles southwest of Mankato, putting it “in an imminent state of failure.”

The National Weather Service says dam operators alerted officials around 10:36 a.m. Monday that the soil around the dam had eroded.

The failure is expected to cause the Minnesota River at Mankato to rise just below major flood status Tuesday morning.
